masters of landscape architecture > Site Ephemerality

Cypress Creek Park in Montgomery, Alabama is a highly bio-diverse and lush ecosystem in the middle of industrial Montgomery. The landscape is under appreciated and even when appreciated, most of the attention is given to its biological attributes. Little praise or conversation occurs within the region about how magical the human experience in this place can be. The experience of dappling light or intense shadow, the sogginess and permeability of the ground slurping up hiking boots, the looming dawn red cypress’s scattered knees, and the habitats within. As a studio, we were challenged to turn our human experience in this place into sketches, models, and photo collage compilations. My compilation of experiences attempts to address the two swamp habitats as motifs occurring throughout the site in it’s entirety; combatting the tendency to think of this place in episodes based on habitats.
